6 Days Rongai Route

Route Overview

Rongai is the only Kilimanjaro route that begins on the mountain’s remote northern slope, close to the Kenyan border. This quieter side of Kilimanjaro offers a unique and more solitary trekking experience, making it an ideal choice for climbers who prefer peaceful wilderness trails over the busier southern approaches.

The journey starts with a scenic 3–4 hour drive from Moshi to Nalemuru Gate, where the adventure officially begins. As you ascend, you’ll enjoy diverse landscapes and consistent, gentle gradients that support a smooth acclimatization process.

Rongai is also the only route that passes close to Mawenzi—one of Kilimanjaro’s three volcanic cones and the third-highest peak in Africa—offering dramatic views you won’t find on any other trail. The descent follows the Marangu Route, allowing trekkers to experience both the northern and southern sides of the mountain.

While Rongai can be completed in either six or seven days, the 7-day itinerary is strongly recommended for optimal acclimatization and the highest summit success rate.
