The Machame Route, popularly known as the “Whiskey Route,” is the second most frequented trail on Mount Kilimanjaro—and for good reason. It offers an exceptional blend of scenery, challenge, and acclimatization. Beginning on the southern slopes at Machame Gate, the trail takes you through all of Kilimanjaro’s dramatic ecological zones: from lush tropical rainforest to moorland, alpine desert, and finally the stark Arctic summit.
Campsites along the trail are strategically placed to promote a smooth, gradual acclimatization, significantly increasing summit success. On Day 3, the Machame Route joins the Lemosho and Umbwe routes at Barranco Camp, creating a lively and scenic hub beneath the famous Barranco Wall.
Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), you will be transferred to your hotel in Moshi. Later, your head guide will conduct a detailed trek briefing, gear check, and final preparations for the climb.
